Fergus County Council on Aging

The Fergus County Council on Aging is one of many such offices located in Montana and in all 50 states. The Councils were created as a result of the Older Americans Act of 1965. A wide variety of services and programs are offered to seniors so they may live happy, healthy, lives with independence, dignity, and respect. All of our programs are available to people 60 years of age or older and spouses regardless of ability to pay.

Signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson, the Older Americans Act of 19S5 set the stage for organizations interested in serving the needs of the aging population. Under this legislation, all 50 states receive grant funding "to provide assistance in the development of new or improved programs to help older persons." In exchange, each program which receives funding mjst meet stated objectives and abide by several dictates, including the requirement that all persons age 60 and over have access to core services regardless of ability to pay.

In Montana, this grant funding is distributed via the Montana Aging Services Network. The state is divided into 10 regions, each overseen by an Area Office. Fergus County is part of Area II, with the Area Office headquartered in Roundup. The Area Office contracts with organizations such as the Fergus County Council on Aging to provide core services, such as congregate and home-delivered meals, information and assistance, transportation, homemaking, nutrition education, and the like.

Despite its name, the Fergus County Council on Aging is NOT a government agency, but rather a private, non-profit organization. State and federal funding combined account for less than 40% of the Council's total annual budget. The remainder of the organization's funding is derived from donations from clients for services, local transportation contracts, fundraisers, memorial donations, and the generous support of many individual and business donors throughout the Central Montana community.

The Fergus County Council on Aging as we know it today is the result of more than 30 years of dedication by a community who values its older citizens.
