Fun in the Summer

Summertime is playtime in Central Montana with much to offer as getaways from the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life. And any chance to get outside in the sunshine and temperate weather shouldn’t be passed up.

Trout fishermen can dip their lines in Big Spring Creek - one of Montana’s premiere trout streams - or try their luck on other area trout waters including the Judith River and Warm Spring Creek. Local reservoirs include East Fork Dam, Casino Creek, Hanson Creek, Upper and Lower Carter’s Ponds, Petrolia, Yellow Water and many private ponds, which are teeming with lunker rain-bows and browns. For warm water anglers, Fort Peck Lake offers one of the premiere fisheries in the world for walleye and northern. Fishing on the Missouri River above the lake can also be very good. Stop in at one of the local sporting goods stores for license information.

Mountain biking and hiking enthusiasts will find an excellent trail system in the Big Snowy Mountains around the popular Crystal Lake in addition to the variety terrain to be found in the Judith and Little Belt Mountains.

Canoeists can paddle along the same route as legendary explorers Lewis and Clark along the Upper Missouri Na-tional Wild and Scenic River. The Bureau of Land Management manages the 149-mile stretch of river that flows through some of the most unspoiled and un-settled land in the country. And if you don’t have a canoe, try “tubing” down one of the area creeks or rivers, such as Big Spring Creek and Warm Spring Creek which are both popular locations.
