Licensing Regulations & Authorities

Driver’s Licenses: Department of Transportation building, Airport Rd., (406) 538-8725. Examiner generally available in Lewistown on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (closed noon-1 p.m.). Call the office for current schedule. Allow at least an hour for testing. No road tests given after 4 p.m. New residents are required to obtain a Montana drivers license within 90 days of moving to the state (30 days for commercial drivers).

Vehicle Registration: Fergus County Treasurer’s office, second floor, county courthouse, 712 W. Main, (406) 535-9220. Open 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday, except for holidays. New residents must register their vehicles once they become permanent residents and are gainfully employed.

Marriage Licenses: Fergus County Clerk of District Court office, third floor county courthouse, 712 W. Main, (406) 535-5026. Open 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday, except for holidays. Both parties must be present to obtain a license and will be asked to show one piece of identification. A pre-marital blood test is required for women under the age of 50. Applicants will be asked to provide information including birthplace, parents’ full names, parents’ birth state or country and information about previous marriages. Applicants ages 16 or 17 must participate in marriage counseling, obtain signed consent of parents or guardians and have the district judge’s approval before obtaining a license. Licenses are effective upon issuance and expire after 180 days if not used.

Pet Licenses: Available anytime at Lewistown Police Department, 305 West Watson, (406) 535-1800. Also sold at the Pet Assistance League rabies clinic each year in February. Licenses required for all dogs, optional for cats. Proof of current rabies vaccination must be presented at time of licensing. All licenses expire December 31. Those renewed later than March 31 each year double in price. New li-censes may be obtained at any time during the year.
