Target Teen, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization funded through donations and grants. This program was established at the request of local youths to provide a challenging, fun, informative and less traditional youth group. Approximately 25 local youth are currently active in the program which includes work and community service projects, kids socials, activities, and training workshops designed to develop self-esteem and work skills for the youth.

Today's youth face more challenges than any generation in history. At any age our children face peer pressure, media, drugs, poverty, abuse, divorce, personal tragedy, academic failure, crime and stimulus in many forms that encourage detachment from core groups like family, church and school. This lack of social attachment is evident in many youth within our communities.

Target Teen, Inc. was developed as an answer to the call of local youth to combat this cycle of hopelessness and replace the negative stimulus with positive elements such as rewards, camaraderie, counseling, activity, self pride, new skills, encouragement and hope.

Work projects are a fundamental part of this teen group. The projects vary from community service to specific requests from individuals willing to hire the youth. These work projects are designed to build self-esteem and self worth while beautifying the community as a whole. The youth develop a sense of pride in our community because they have helped create what they see and they have learned some basic skills which will help them obtain jobs in the future.

The youth are insured by a Fergus County Extension program and supervised by an adult project manager at all times thus ensuring safety and quality completion of projects.

Activities are earned and chosen by the youth. Outings have included skiing, a winter survival campout, sledding, horse clinics, and picnics. Future plans include camping, hiking, river rafting, airplane rides, trips, CPR classes, First Aid and much more. The teens are currently working towards a trip to Alaska. All activities are supervised by adults who are dedicated to the safety, well-being and meaningful entertainment of the youth.

As the group develops, other agencies want to become involved. The National Guard and The Boy Scouts Venturing Club are assisting with activity ideas and supplies. Local businesses have been generous with food donations for activities.

Our target is teenage boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 18. Members may be local or from surrounding communities. Youth volunteer to join the group and must have permission from their parents to attend. The youth group meets for a social hour every Friday evening at 5:00 at the 618 Building.

Parental Participation is vital to our success with the youth. The family is the most important unit to our community and society and joint involvement of parents and youth is essential to our success as a youth group.

Parents are encouraged to participate with any scheduled activities and to join us at the Board Meetings which are held every other Tuesday evening at 5:15 at the 618 Building.

Through the joint effort of parents, teens and the community, we will all benefit. Our teens will learn new skills, leadership and social interaction. They will earn their chosen activities and grow from their experiences and the community will benefit from the work projects completed by the teens.
